Planning in progress

Planning is going slow. Got food drops planned to Port Clinton, PA. There are many options, from how many miles per day can be done to mail food or buy in town to How many days of food to carry........
Our training hikes range from 2 to 10 miles and 20 to 40 per week.
Thea received a new 850 down jacket with water repellent down. Upgrade from my down jacket.  Light weight and warm, only 16 oz.
Have been making beef jerky and something call Hudson Bay bread.  It is more like a energy bar, tastes great and can be a meal in itself.

Dragon's Tooth Day Hike

Dragon's Tooth is one of the Roanoke Seven Summits Challenge.  This is our six of seven summits so far.
The day was very nice. Started a little cool for our 10:40am start. Only saw one other hiker this morning and had Dragon's Tooth for ourselves at lunch.
Trail crews have installed many rock steps to make the climb a little more hiker friendly. But it is still a challenge at upper rock climbs to get to the top.
Back at the car by 2:50pm.
We thought while in the Roanoke area we would catch the movie Gravity at the Valley View Theater.
The movie time we could make was 4:10pm. The movie was 3D and cost us $12/p with senior citizen  discount. We got our popcorn and root beer and made it to our seats.  Just before show time we thought we would have the place to our own. But four more people showed up. The movie was awesome in 3D and it was full of action to the end.

Our next and last summit is Poor Mountain, 3.8 mile round trip hike. Hope to finish it this week.

See you on the trail. "The mountains are calling and I must go." John Muir

Short training hike on a fall day.

Atgrasshopper and I are doing the Roanoke 7 Summits put on by the Roanoke Parks and Recreation. Today we hiked Brushy Mountain which is close to Carvins Cove Reservoir. It was a 5.2 hike round trip on a well graded trail. This area is heavily used by mountain bikers and the parking lot showed it.  We had a very pleasant day for a hike with blue skies and a little cool breeze. It took us about 2 hours and 40 minutes at a easy pace.

Appalachian Trail

Sunday was a beautiful day to be outdoors. I went out and did some trail maintenance on a section of the AT located in Grafton Notch State Park. Leaves covered the trail. Finding the water bars was easy, cleaning them of all the leaves was a other story. It took me 5 hours to complete my 1 mile round trip. The trees above 2000 feet had lost their leaves and looked like Nov. The trail was muddy in several spots from the rain we received couple of days ago. The waterfalls were back in business compare to this summer with very little water coming down the mountain.

Many hiker were out today, some climbing to Old Speck, some doing the eyebrow trail loop.
